Highlights of Olympics 2020: With 7 Medals, India Records Its Best Olympic Performance

With Neeraj Chopra's gold in javelin throw, the number of Olympic medals at the Tokyo Olympics rose to seven, the highest number ever won in India, beating 2012 London Olympics. India won one gold, two silver and four bronze medals at the Tokyo Olympics.

  • Neeraj Chopra:  Gold

India's top star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra became the first track and field runner from the country to win gold at the Olympics. In addition, India jumped to 47th place in the Tokyo Olympic 2020 after Neeraj's gold.Neeraj Chopra was regarded as one of the brightest hopes of an Indian medal at the Tokyo Olympics. He became famous when he set a new world record in 2016. Since then, Neeraj has only fueled his success, winning gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Asia Games. The Indian star also introduced the biggest stages of the game, destroying the men’s Javelin stadium at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

  • Mirabai Chanu:  Silver

Mirabai Chanu won silver in the 49 kg weightlifting category. A native of Manipur, the 26-year-old has lifted 202 kg to come second behind China's Hou Zhihui, who won 210 kg gold. The Manipur athlete lifted the total weight of 202 kg to win the medal. Gold at the event was won by Hou Zhihui of China, who nominated a combined weight of 210 kg. Chanu picked up a total of 87 kg in the snatch half of the event and ended up riding a 115 kg clean and jersey. He is the second weight lifter in India after Karnam Malleswari to win the Olympic medal.

In the end, it was heartbreaking for the warrior who gave his all to fight the world champion twice.

  • PV Sindhu: Bronze

PV Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals as the Indian defeated China's He Bing Jiao in a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Chen Yu Fei won gold, while Tai Tzu-Ying chose silver. Sindhu became the second Indian athlete after champion Sushil Kumar and the country's first woman to win two Olympic medals, sending He Bingjiao of China 21-13, 21-15 to win a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

  • Lovlina Borgohain: Bronze

Lovlina Borgohain ended her Tokyo Olympics bronze medal after World Cup champions and semi-finalists Busenaz Surmeneli in the women's welterweight division. Lovlina becomes the third Indian boxer to win the Olympic medal, behind Vijender Singh (men’s middleweight bronze medalist, Beijing 2008) and MC Mary Kom (women's flyweight bronze, London 2012).

  • Bajrang Punia: Bronze

Bajrang Punia won India's sixth medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after defeating Kazakhstan's Daulet Niyazbekov in the men's 65 kg free men's event. As soon as Punia was announced as a bronze medalist, people from all over the country broke into the Olympian celebration celebrations. After dominating the entire match with Niyazbekov's reigning national medal, Punia impressed everyone on the pitch and those who watched at home with an 8-0 victory. The Asian gold medalist also proved his mettle after a semi-final defeat.

  • Indian Men's Hockey Team: Bronze

The Indian men's hockey team today showed off their best game as they beat Germany 5-4 in a bronze medal defeat at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Indian hockey players won the Olympic medal after a 41-year gap. India's last gold at the eight Olympics went back to the 1980 Moscow Games. Simranjeet Singh (17, 34 minutes) scored the equalizer, while Hardik Singh (27), Harmanpreet Singh (29) and Rupinder Pal Singh (31) were among India's top scorers. Germany's goals came from Timur Oruz (2), Niklas Wellen (24), Benedikt Furk (25) and Lukas Windfeder (48). There were tears and hugs in the stadium as the Indians led by Manpreet Singh and Australian coach Graham Reid praised this historic moment. It is the third bronze hockey medal in Olympic history.
