Celina Jaitly reacted with anger to the violence inflicted on the two tribal women. The women were stripped and paraded naked on the streets by a group of men.
What’s ironic is that the ghastly incident took place last month however the video that has shocked India and the whole world went viral on Thursday.
The incident has prompted the Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi and many other celebrities to speak up on the burning issue.
Even though the incident is old, Police made arrests only after the video went viral on all social media platforms.
Taking to Twitter, Celina wrote, “I am unable to sleep or eat since I saw the Manipur violence videos few hours ago. Shaking with anger, pain and anger again. Violence is violence… Ethnic, non ethnic, whatever the reason violence is violence and violence against women isn't cultural, it's criminal.”
She further wrote, “Protection of women and children should be utmost priority of authorities. To see this heinous, barbaric crime against women has shaken me to the core, I urge the government and I have faith in the government that they take such stringent action that no one dares even in their wildest dreams to think of ever attempting anything like this ever again!!! Manipur burning… Manipur crisis.”
Priyanka Chopra also strongly reacted to the crime: “It took a video going viral… 77 days after the heinous crimes were committed… Before actions were taken. Rationale? Reasons? None matter--irrespective of what and why, situational or circumstantial, we cannot allow women to be pawns in any games.”
“The collective shame and anger needs to be channelled now in a unified voice for just one thing- swift justice”, she added.
P M Modi said, “My heart is filled with grief and anger. The incident in Manipur is shameful for any civil society.”
Jaya Bachchan expressed, “I felt so bad, I couldn’t see the entire video. I was ashamed. This happened in May but went viral now. But, no one has said a single word in sympathy. This is about women's safety. But you say things like we have selected 50 per cent women for a panel. Hanthi ke daat hai (This is like Elephant's teeth).”
The video has sparked massive outrage and has raised many questions regarding the safety of women and the audacity of men who commit these crimes so blatantly in modern India. Women and children can become easy targets in the ongoing conflict in Manipur and it appears that the police are not doing enough for their protection.
Ethnic violence broke out in the state of Manipur in the past two months. Unrest in the state began on May 3 when Kuki tribes protested against granting scheduled tribe status to the Meitei community of the state.
