Seattle Cop Who Killed Jaahnavi Kandula Has Been Fired for Violations

Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula was killed by Seattle police officer Kevin Dave after being accidentally run over by his police vehicle in 2023.

The Seattle police officer Kevin Dave has now been fired for violations, according to officials.

The Seattle Times reported on Monday that Chief Sue Rahr had fired Dave from the Seattle Police Department for violating four departmental policies.

“I believe the officer did not intend to hurt anyone that night and that he was trying to get to a possible overdose victim as quickly as possible,” Rahr said.

“However, I cannot accept the tragic consequences of his dangerous driving. His positive intent does not mitigate the poor decision that caused the loss of human life and brought discredit to the Seattle Police Department,” the report said.

Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, was struck by Kevin Dave’s police vehicle when she was crossing a street in Seattle on 23 January 2023. She was struck in the South Lake Union crosswalk.

Kevin was en route to respond to a drug overdose call, driving at a speed of 74 mph. Kandula was propelled 100 feet after being struck by the vehicle.

The case drew international attention after a recording of Daniel Auderer, Vice President of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, was released. He was heard laughing and making light of Kandula’s death. He was also heard saying that the city should 'just write a check' for $11,000. Auderer was dismissed in July due to his insensitive remarks.

The Consulate General of India in Seattle had been continuously collaborating with authorities to ensure justice in the case. They have been in regular contact with Kandula's family and have assured them of all possible support to ensure justice for Kandula and her family.
