International Women’s Day commemorates women’s rights


Celebration of the International Women’s Day first took place in New York, held by Socialist Party of America. The year was 1909 and the date was February 28. It was the next year, 1910 when the date March 8 was suggested by International Woman's Conference. The main idea behind celebrating International Women’s Day was to preserve equal rights for men and women. This also included suffrage for women. When the women of Soviet Russia gained suffrage in 1917, March 8 was declared a national holiday for the country.


March 8, International Women’s Day is an official holiday in the following countries as well -


Afghanistan,  Angola, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Nepal, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine,  Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zambia.
