Tom Hanks’ Novel ‘The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece’ Gives Us A Glimpse of The Movie Industry

Talented actor Tom Hanks has published his novel titled “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece” inspired by his own acting career. 

The novel is based on the making of a multi million dollar superhero action movie. It features a male actor who keeps delaying filming due to his difficult behaviour. 

Tom Hanks, 66, says that he identifies with the male character’s behaviour as he has “pulled every single one of those moments of behaviour” himself on a set. “Not everybody is at their best every single day on a motion picture set.”

“I've had tough days trying to be a professional when my life has been falling apart in more ways than one and the requirement for me that day is to be funny, charming and loving - and it's the last way I feel,” he expressed. 

Hanks however takes pride in always being on time for work. In a motion picture business one cannot play around with the “timing or the length of the shoot or the budget. That is a cardinal sin in the motion picture business”, he explains. 

“You will be amazed at how many people know that they can get away with it, and are told they can get away with it, because they are carrying the movie on their shoulders”, he reveals. 

He said that taking to publishing was a way to keep himself away from the pressures of shooting. Being engaged in shooting for long means you can “just run out of curiosity for the job.”

“Sometimes you just have to have some other reason to spark your imagination,” he said. 

So how did Tom Hanks make his writing journey happen amidst his busy schedule? 

“I wrote in between films, I wrote wherever I was, I wrote on planes, I wrote at home, I wrote on vacation, I wrote in hotel rooms, I wrote on long weekends when I wasn't working,” he said. 

The actor said that he has always written in some form or the other. His collection of short stories Uncommon Type was published in 2017. He began writing for his novel the following year. 

Tom’s book gives us a peek of the filmmaking industry and actors. It also touches upon the subject of sexual harassment. 

Due to his busy movie schedule he will not be writing his next novel anytime soon although the desire to write is strong. 

“It's just the best way to spend one's time outside of being with those that you love and make you laugh”, the two time Oscar winning actor rightly points out.
