Many students say they were able to escape the attack because of the selfless act of a few brave ones.
A football coach used his body to shield others from being shot, a teacher stuffed 19 students into a closet and a janitor's warning saved a number of lives during a deadly school shooting.
Football coach saves lives and dies
When the shots of gunfire were first heard, there was a call on a school walkie talkie and someone asked if the sounds were firecrackers. Then Aaron Feis, the football coach and security guard responded to the call saying that it was not fireworks and that was the last anyone heard of him.
Witnesses say the coach shielded the students with his own body from gunfire and pushed them through open doors and took the bullets thus becoming the first victim to be identified.
His death was disclosed by the football team in a tweet early Thursday morning.
“It is with Great sadness that our Football Family has learned about the death of Aaron Feis,” the team wrote. “He was our Assistant Football Coach and security guard. He selflessly shielded students from the shooter when he was shot. He died a hero and he will forever be in our hearts and memories.”
Teacher saves 19 students by hiding them in a closet
A teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School named Melissa Falkowsk told her students to get down and huddle themselves on the floor when she got to know there was an active shooter inside the building,Later, she decided to take another precaution to save them so she instructed them to hide in a closet.
"I managed to put 19 kids in the closet with me," Falkowski told . "This is the worst nightmare that could ever happen to you."
Falkowski and the group of students stood silently till they were escorted out by a SWAT team. They were in there for 30 minutes. The students are grateful to her for her act.
Teacher blocks door so students can hide
Scott Beigel,a geography teacher unlocked his classroom in order to help the students escape the gunman, and in the bargain he lost his for his selfless act. The students were able to run into the classroom when they heard the gunshots.
A janitor stopped students from going towards the shooter
David Hogg, a senior and his friends began running when they heard the sounds of gunshots hardly knowing they were running towards death itself. A janitor who happened to be there stopped them and told to run the other direction thus saving them and numerous others from running into the arms of death.
