“Sky Bows”, “Runway Salutes”, IC 814 Pilot Devi Sharan Retires after 40 Years; to Work at The Training Center of Air India

IC 814 Pilot, Devi Sharan flies his last flight from Melbourne to Delhi after a remarkable 40 years of Journey. His dedication and effort in rescuing passengers from Kandahar will be engraved among future aviators.

Devi Sharan, the hero of IC814, bids farewell to the skies as he retires, closing a remarkable chapter defined by courage and determination. IC flight currently known as the Air India was hijacked in 1999 by 5 terrorists shortly after it took off from Kathmandu Airport. A total of 179 passengers and 11 crews were present along with Captain in command, Devi Sharan.

Air India shared a heartfelt photo montage on social media, celebrating Captain Devi Sharan's heroic legacy following the IC814 hijack. In another video, he reflected on his journey while piloting his final flight from Melbourne to Delhi. "This is my last flight and I could not be more thankful for a truly memorable and glorious career. I would like to thank my passengers over the years for allowing me to fly you safely back home,"

Speaking to the Times Group, Devi expressed his feelings about the Hijack and said those were some of the critical days. ““IC 814 hijacking taught me life is very unpredictable and one has to be always ready to fight back. Those were the toughest days of my life and my only aim was to save the lives of everyone on that aircraft. I hope and pray no crew member, passenger, or anyone else ever relives those moments,”

Deeply affected by the 1999 hijack, he remained vigilant, always observing passengers to ensure everyone's safety on board. Captain Sharan had completed his flying course from Karnal in the year 1989 post which he joined Indian Airlines (Now Known as Air India). He was a trained pilot on Boeing 737-200 and Airbus A320 and A380.

“With the same enthusiasm of a young boy who once joined this airline, I now turn the page and embark on the golden years of my life,” read his mail to colleges after his last flight. On asking about the plans, Devi thinks of farming in Karnal and joining the prestigious AI training facility.

Captain Devi Sharan leaves an indelible mark on aviation history with his unwavering dedication and pivotal role in rescuing 200 passengers from the hijacked IC814 flight. He will always be remembered in the history of aviation and admired for exceeding his duties and pushing beyond his limits. His sincere actions during the hostile situation will be engraved amongst the coming generations.
