Mahakumbh 2025: UP Police Files 13 FIRs against 140 Social Media Accounts for Spreading Misinformation

In a decisive move against misinformation, the Uttar Pradesh police have registered thirteen FIRs against 140 social media accounts for allegedly spreading false claims related to Mahakumbh 2025.

According to reports, 34 of these accounts shared an old video of a past train accident, falsely associating it with the grand religious gathering in Prayagraj. A report by the Hindustan Times highlighted that the misleading posts attempted to connect a 2022 fire incident with Mahakumbh 2025, creating unnecessary panic among devotees.

Legal Action Taken by Authorities

Deputy Inspector General of Police(DIG) Vaibhav Krishna confirmed that strict action had been taken against the accounts responsible for disseminating fake news. “13 FIRs have been registered against 140 social media handles that shared misleading content...Today, more than one crore people have taken a holy dip,” Vaibhav Krishna told ANI.

He further assured that all integral preparations for the upcoming Maha Shivratri festival on February 26, 2025, had been finalized.

False Claims Linking Train Fire to Mahakumbh 2025

During regular social media surveillance, authorities discovered that several social media handles had shared a video of the 2022 Parbat Express train fire in Bangladesh, falsely claiming that it was a recent accident involving Mahakumbh devotees.

Misinformation propagating widely, with some posts wrongly alleging that over 300 people had died in a train fire accident on February 14, 2025, while traveling to Prayagraj.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP Kumbh) Rajesh Dwivedi clarified the issue, stating, “Police confirmed the video was unrelated to Prayagraj and refuted the claims on social media. Cases have been registered against the identified accounts, and legal action has been initiated.”
