Argentinean Footballer Diego Maradona has undergone a successful brain surgery for a blood clot in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.
The Doctors were successful in removing the blood clot and according to Dr. Leopoldo Luque, Maradona has “coped well” with the surgery. He underwent the surgery in a private clinic in the national capital.
“It's under control, there's a little drainage (of blood). He'll remain under observation”, he revealed about the former footballer’s condition.
“The operation consists of a small incision to drain the blood. In 24 or 48 hours the patient can leave the hospital,” neurosurgeon Raul Matera told TyC Sports channel.
On Monday Maradona was taken to a hospital in La Plata where he is the coach of Argentine Primera División club ‘Gimnasia de La Plata’ after he was unwell.
He was later transferred to a clinic in Buenos Aires on Tuesday when a scan showed that he had a blood clot in his brain. He was accompanied by one of his daughters Giannina.
Fans gathered outside the clinic in support of their favourite star. They held banners that showed his face and words that read, “Come on Diego!”
Doctor Luque further revealed that Maradona has difficulty retaining iron in his blood due to a gastric bypass surgery he underwent to lose 50 kilograms in 2005. Though the great footballer has given up his addiction to drugs, he still takes medication in the form of tranquilizers and anxiolytics.
Maradona had a string of health issues earlier such as suffering two heart attacks and contracting Hepatitis B.
Luque explained that at this stage the greatest footballer of all time needs the support of people.
