Did You Know That One of The Earliest Dinosaurs in India Was Named after Rabindranath Tagore?

We know of renowned artist Rabindranath Tagore for his rich legacy in areas of art, literature, prose, poetry, and music. There are only a handful of people however who know that one of the earliest dinosaurs that walked the soil in India was named after him.

Parveen Kaswan from the Indian Forest Service (IFS) shared this surprising fact on his twitter account. He mentioned the details as well. He said that “Barapasaurus #tagorei was an 18 metre long & 7 toned #dinosaur which walked through #India once.” He added that it was the “first complete mounted dinosaur skeleton discovered in the 1960s in Adilabad district of #India.”

This message caught the attention of Twitterati as not many people were aware of this strange fact. The name Barapasaurus has been derived from ‘Bara’ meaning big and the word ‘pa’ means leg and the last name ‘tagorei’ is the name of our renowned poet- Rabindranath Tagore.

Parveen enlightened his followers with many other facts about the early presence of dinosaurs in India.

Some followers left their own views on the post:

The first dinosaur fossil in India was discovered in 1828 and was sent to the museum in Kolkata and London. It was named ‘Titanosaurus’ by an English naturalist and geologist, Richard Lydekkar.

Rabindranath Tagore was a poet, author and musician who left a rich legacy behind in art and literature in India. The author of ‘Gitanjali’ became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.

The ‘Bard of Bengal’ was known his novels, essays, short stories, songs and so on albeit he is widely known outside Bengal for his “elegant prose and magical poetry.”

The first complete mounted dinosaur discovered in India and named after the respected artist only adds another feather to his hat.
