CBI Takes over The Investigation of The Gruesome Kolkata Rape Case, Prime Accused Sanjoy Roy under Judicial Custody

The chilling rape and murder case of the 31-year-old Kolkata trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical college has been taken over by The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Earlier Chief Minister of Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, had said that Kolkata Police should complete the probe by Sunday, failing which the case will be handed over to the CBI.

The CBI has registered the FIR of the Kolkata police.

The team of CBI officials and medical experts who will conduct the investigation will visit Kolkata on Wednesday.

Sources said that the CBI will focus on the following key points while investigating one of the most chilling rape cases:

a) Was the trainee doctor raped by one man or many, b) Was the accused, Sanjoy Roy, reportedly a civilian police volunteer, alone, c) Was evidence destroyed after the incident, d) Why was the murder first reported as a suicide, d) Was hospital administration involved, and f) Why were the cops only informed the morning after the doctor was murdered.

Serious lapses were found in the hospital’s administration by the Calcutta High Court.

The court also found fault with the former Principal of the state-run college, Dr.Sandip Ghosh’s administration skills.

Ironically, hours after resigning, Dr.Ghosh was given the same post in another college. He was assigned the position of Principal in Calcutta National Medical College. There were widespread protests following this as protestors desired to know the cause for this urgency.

Furious doctors across India have staged protests demanding better protection facilities and laws to protect health workers.

The trainee doctor’s badly injured body was found last Friday, in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.

Sanjoy Roy, 33, is the prime accused in the case and was arrested on August 10. He has worked as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police's Disaster Management Group since 2019, as per an NDTV report.

He was seen entering the college building at 4 am with a bluetooth device around his neck. Investigators found the bluetooth device near the victim’s body. It was paired with Roy’s phone which made him the prime accused He is currently under 14-day judicial custody.
