On Tuesday morning, the Nepal-Tibet border witnessed severe earthquakes which reached a magnitude of 7.1. The shocks were felt in Bihar where people ran out of their houses and apartments. No news of property damage has been reported in Nepal or India yet.
Tibet-Nepal border falls in the high Seismic zone where Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates adjourn causing frequent earthquakes. Lobuche is situated 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu and 8 kilometers from the first Everest base camp. People residing in the area are quite familiar with seismic activities.
Officials have urged the people to prepare for the aftershocks followed by the earthquake. India and Nepal are monitoring the activities closely to ensure the safety of the residents. Mini shocks were experienced shortly with 4.7 and 4.2 on the Richter scale. The time of the other two shocks was recorded around 7:02 am and 7:07 am respectively.
Tibet was massively affected because of the quakes as there were 6 aftershocks that were equally powerful. Reuters claims that close to 50 deaths were caused because of the high-frequency earthquake. Chinese news agencies informed that 60 people were injured because of the tremors.
Several buildings and shrines were demolished near the epicenter of the quake. "Dingri county and its surrounding areas experienced very strong tremors, and many buildings near the epicenter have collapsed," claimed a Chinese media agency. A resident of Nepal narrated her ordeal in a spot interview. "I was sleeping. The bed was shaking, and I thought my child was moving the bed. I didn’t pay that much attention, but the shaking of the window confirmed to me that it was an earthquake. I then hurriedly called my child and evacuated the house and went to the open ground,"
The intensity of the earthquake is considered to be highly affecting which may cause catastrophic consequences for the habitat and people. Shigatse, a city located near the Chinese border witnessed a series of 29 shocks that ranged near magnitude 3 in the past 5 years. However, this year, the belt experienced a massive quake which instilled fear among the people.
While search and rescue teams are working in Tibet to ensure a smooth evacuation process for the individuals stuck under the debris. Other Administrative teams have been put on standby to deal with more casualties.
