The Emmy awards this year took on a different note, keeping in mind the pandemic. Dressed in a black suit, American host Jimmy Kimmel took charge of the stage on Sunday night in Staples Center in Los Angeles while addressing the audience.
At first, one would be startled to see such a vibrant and a large audience but as Jimmy takes us through the event, we get to know that in fact, the audience was from archive footage and not from the live audience at Staples Center.
Jimmy was standing all by himself on the stage and the nominated celebrities in the audience were cardboard cut-outs. The real celebrities however got to savour the show from the comfort of their homes.
The big winners on Sunday night were ‘Schitt’s Creek’, reality drama ‘Watchmen’ and HBO’s family drama ‘Succession’ although ‘Schitt’s Creek’ took the most awards for a comedy series. ‘Schitt’s Creek’ won 7 Emmys for a comedy series. ‘Succession’ and ‘Watchmen’ won four awards each.
Another landmark moment at the Emmys was that 24 year old actress Zendaya became the youngest person to win the ‘best actress in a drama’ for her role in HBO’s ‘Euphoria.’ Zendaya had tough competition beating big names like Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Olivia Coleman ( The Crown) and Laura Linney (Ozark).
Jennifer Aniston came live on stage with Jimmy to present the lead actress in a comedy series. They followed a strict safety protocol to announce the winner’s name however the events that played out thereafter was pretty hilarious. The award was finally presented to Catharine O’Hara for ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and the trophy was presented to her by a person in a Hazmat suit.
