The government security forces had to withdraw as a result of the advances and there are fears that they could soon fall to the insurgents.
The second biggest city of Kandahar was taken over by the Talibans on Friday. “Following heavy clashes late last night the Taliban took control of Kandahar city,” a government official told Reuters.
On Thursday the insurgents seized the city of Ghazni, 150 km southwest of Kabul. Security forces said that the Firuz Koh, capital of Ghor province, was handed over to the Taliban without any fight.
Cities such as Mazar-i-Sharif in the north, Jalalabad near the Pakistani border and Kabul are still under the government.
Due to the Taliban's advances, dozens of ammunition have fallen into the hands of the Taliban.

The speed at which the insurgents are advancing and capturing Afghanistan province after province has perplexed people worldwide.
The United States of America and the United Kingdom will be sending 3000 and 600 troops respectively to evacuate their people from the respective embassies. Even Canada would be sending troops however the number of troops hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Meanwhile, Joseph Biden’s government is facing criticism by certain Afghans and also by President Trump for withdrawing US troops 20 years after the Talibans were ousted.
President Biden however expressed no regret on the withdrawal of troops stating that Washington had spent more than $1 trillion in America's longest war and lost thousands of troops.
Amidst the takeover, there are also fears concerning a humanitarian catastrophe.
