This day 26 years ago, Sushmita Sen created history when she was crowned Miss Universe for her captivating persona. The event was held on 21 May 1994 in Pasay, Philippines. She became the first Indian woman to win this pageant.
The tall, lean and charming girl was a teenager back then. Sen stood before the audience as an epitome of not only beauty but also brains. Besides her persona, her mind-blowing answer in the pageant was what captivated the audience.
On this memorable occasion the actress created a video documenting the important events in her life right from her crowning moment, childhood memories to photographs capturing cherished moments with her family and friends.
She wrote these inspiring words, “A princess with a crown and a queen of people's hearts...For 26 years. What a magical fairy tale I have lived, where beauty is God's handwriting, character is self-realised, all of it in a loving universe that is inclusive, abundant, filled with empathy, compassion, gratitude and so much goodness of good people. I celebrate you and I celebrate with you.”
She also wrote, “India won Miss Universe for the first time this day in 1994. It will forever remain my life's greatest pride and honour to be the face of history for my country. My gratitude to the Philippines for their unwavering sense of love and belonging for over 2 decades. Also for being my second home. I wish you all an unapologetic life, where you uphold your uniqueness and nurture the power of I am. Sharing simple moments from an inspired journey...you're all a part of it.”

Sushmita Sen is currently dating Indian model Rohman Shawl whom she met through Instagram and is a mother to two daughters- Renee and Alisah.
After savouring precious moments of her life as a Miss Universe pageant winner, Sushmita turned to acting. In her first movie Dastak, she plays victim to Sharad Kapoor who was a stalker. She went on to act in films like Biwi no.1, Sirf Tum, Fiza, Maine Hoon Na, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and many more.
The actress recently had a tryst with a chronic disease called Addison disease. She turned to various therapies and fortunately it worked out in her favour. Now she’s back on her feet. The actress lives life on her own terms and is known to break common stereotypes held by society.
