Prime Minister of United Kingdom, Boris Johnson has appointed Indian origin politician Rishi Sunak as the new finance minister of the country in the latest Cabinet reshuffle. Rishi Sunak, who is also the son-in-law of Infosys Co-founder Narayana Murthy, is soon going to join Home Secretary Priti Patel on the top government position as the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

In one of the biggest shakeups of the country since Johnson won a thumping majority in the December 2019 general election, Pakistani origin Sajid Javid has resigned as Chancellor in a shock move. He is now replaced by Sunak, who was till recently Javid’s junior as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury and seen as a rising star within the Cabinet.

The 39-year-old Minister is now all set to move into No. 11 Downing Street, which is next door to the Prime Minister’s Office as he takes over the charge of the second most important government position as the finance minister.  In the official statement Downing Street said, “The Queen has been graciously pleased to approve the appointment of RT Hon Rishi Sunak as Chancellor of the Exchequer.” 

The Member of Parliament from Richmond in Yorkshire is married to Narayan and Sudha Murthy’s daughter Akshata. He first entered the UK Parliament in the year 2015 and has fast risen up the Conservative Party ranks as a staunch supporter of Brexit and who had backed Johnson’s strategy to leave the European Union (EU).

The UK-born son of a National Health Service (NHS) general practitioner (GP) father and a pharmacist mother is a graduate from Oxford and Stanford University.

During the Brexit referendum, Sunak had said, “From working in my mum’s tiny chemist shop to my experience building large businesses, I have seen how we should support free enterprise and innovation to ensure Britain has a stronger future.”

Sunak co-founded a 1-billion pound global investment firm, which is specialised in investing in small British businesses before his entry into politics. He is a strong believer of Brexit and is of the opinion that small businesses in the UK would flourish as a result of Brexit as the “vast majority of British businesses (94 per cent) don’t have anything to do with the EU; but they are still subject to all EU law”.

In the recent Cabinet reshuffle other two prominent Indian origin MPs Alok Sharma and Suella Braver man are also expected to get a promotion.
