The term “K Pop” (Korean Pop Music) became famous in the 2000s. K Pop has not only gained immense popularity over the years, it is also diversifying.

The Korean pop music gained popularity not only in South East Asia but also in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South America, Latin America and Middle East.

Even foreign rappers such as Akon, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West and Ludacris have featured in K Pop songs.

An Indian artist who is gaining ground in the Korean Music Industry is Shreya Lenka from India. 18 year old Shreya hails from the steel township of Rourkela in Odisha.

The Rourkela gal is in the last round of the global audition and if she defeats Brazilian contestant Gabriela Dalcin, she’ll become the first Indian ever to become a K Pop idol.

She’s the only Indian among 23 contestants to be chosen by DR Music in Korea for the global audition.

Besides being a singer and a yoga practioner, Shreya Lenka is a classically trained Odissi dancer.

If Shreya wins the audition she’ll also become the fifth member of the girl band ‘Black Swan’ which made its debut in 2020.

Black Swan has members from multi ethnic backgrounds. The girl band comprises of two Koreans, Fatou a Senegalese vocalist/rapper and Leia a Brazilian/Japanese singer.

“Since I have a deep voice, I faced difficulty in finding the right vocal trainer. My grandmother helped me find one”, Shreya told Odisha Bytes.

“She took me to a Hindustani classical music teacher, who taught me twice a week. But, for the western songs, I had to rely on online videos and self-learning,” Lenka said.

If Shreya clears the auditions she’ll join Korean singers Youngheun, Fatou, Judy, and Leia who are already part of the ‘Black Swan’ group.

According to Entertainment website Meaww, Brazilian contestant Gabriela Dalcin is a member of the dance cover girl group ‘Queens of Revolution.’ Both Shreya and Dalcin perform K Pop cover songs. Both the girls are now going to South Korea for training. It is going to be a tough battle for sure between the two talented singers for the coveted ‘Black Swan’ position.
