Shashi Tharoor is Cleared of All Charges in the Sunanda Pushkar’s Death Case

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has been given a clean chit by a Delhi Court on Wednesday regarding Sunanda Pushkar’s mysterious death case. 

Special Judge Geetanjali Goel has discharged Mr Shashi Tharoor of all charges. 

Sunanda Pushkar’s body was discovered in a luxurious five star hotel in Delhi on January 17, 2014. During this time Mr Tharoor was attending a Congress meet in Delhi. 

 An FIR was registered on January 1, 2015 against unknown persons for murder. 

Tharoor was later booked under IPC Sections 498 A (subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment to suicide). 

Mr Tharoor was happy to hear the verdict in his favour. Tharoor said that he was “grateful” and he described the long journey as “seven and a half years of absolute torture.” 

He further wrote in a statement, “This brings a significant conclusion to the long nightmare which had enveloped me after the tragic passing of my late wife Sunanda. I have weathered dozens of unfounded accusations and media vilification patiently, sustained my faith in the judiciary, which today stands vindicated.”

Shashi Tharoor’s lawyer Vikas Pahwa welcomed the verdict. He said, “I am delighted to hear the pronouncement of discharge for Dr Shashi Tharoor. It was a long battle of seven years. Ultimately, justice has prevailed. He had faith in the judicial system right from the beginning. I had always advised Dr Tharoor not to make any public statement as the matter was sub judice. Even the most essential ingredients of the offences were not present in this case.”

He further added, “The chargesheet was without any basis. There was no complaint of harassment or abetment of suicide by any of the family members or friends of late Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor. I am happy that at last after seven years, justice has prevailed and he has been honourable discharged from all the charges made by Delhi Police against him.” 

The special Investigation Team had exonerated the politician the lawyer said. 

The post mortem report couldn’t reveal any specific reason for Sunanda’s death. After her death there was immense speculation in political circles. and some of Pushkar’s last tweets hinted at indifferences between the pair due to a Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar. 

The Congress leader told the court that Sunanda Pushkar’s death was neither suicide not homicide but should be considered an accident as she was struggling with various medical ailments at the time of her death. 

Sunanda Pushkar met Shashi Tharoor at a party hosted by billionaire Sunny Varkey. They got married in 2010 in a Malayali ceremony after he was elected to the Indian Parliament.
