Sachin Tendulkar Delivers One of His Best Speeches at the Laureus World Sports Awards

Cricket Legend Sachin Tendulkar made India proud at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin on Monday.  Sachin won the Laureus Sports Award 2020 for his World Cup-winning moment. It was the moment when his teammates carried him on his shoulders after their historic win in Mumbai in 2011.

He collected the award from former Australian captain Steve Waugh while Tennis Champion Boris Becker announced the winner’s name. Looking dapper in a black suit he went on to deliver one of his best speeches.

After receiving the trophy, Tendulkar said, “To be holding this trophy, I would like to thank the Laureus Academy members for giving this memory to me. I think it is really special. Also, the people who voted and felt that the moment we saw on screen was worth voting for.”

Sport has the power to unite

During his impressive speech, Tendulkar mentioned that during one of his tours to South Africa he met African leader- Nelson Mandela. He was truly honored to meet the leader whose hardships didn’t affect his leadership. One message of the leader that struck a chord with Tendulkar was that the “sport has got the power to unite, unify everyone.”

Talking about the champions in the same room he said, “Some of them did not have everything but they made the best of everything they had. They went on to become champion athletes.” He also thanked them for inspiring youngsters to chase their dreams.

Tennis champion Boris Becker asked Tendulkar what it was like wait to lay his hands on the World Cup Trophy after nearly two decades. To this Tendulkar answered that the “wait taught him not to lose hope and give up in life.”

He explained that his journey began in 1983 when India had won the world cup. He was only ten years then. As everyone was enjoying, he also joined the party. “But somewhere I knew something special has happened to the country and I wanted to experience it one day and that's how my journey began,” said the Master Blaster.
