He received the award for his work in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior where he played Tanaji Malusare.
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior was directed by Om Raut and released on January 10 ,2020. The film also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment and Best Costume Design as well.
The film features Saif Ali Khan, Kajol, and Sharad Kelkar as well.
Reacting to his big win Ajay Devgan expressed: “I'm elated to win the Best Actor Award for Tanhaji—The Unsung Warrior at the 68th National Awards along with Suriya who won for Soorarai Pottru. I thank everyone, most of all my creative team, the audience and my fans. I also express my gratitude to my parents & the Almighty for their blessings. Congratulations to all the other winners.”
He shares his National Award for best Actor with actor Suriya who won the award for his performance in Soorarai Pottru.
He previously received National Awards in the category of best actor for movies like Zakhm and The Legend of Bhagat Singh.
Many celebrities congratulated the actor on the big win including his wife Kajol.

Rohit Shetty who shares a special bond with Ajay Devgan also dropped a special message for his best friend on his big win: “Zakhm. The Legend Of Bhagat Singh. And now Tanhaji. Three national awards. One man. Ajay Devgn.”

Ajay Devgan was last seen in the film Runway 34 in which he gave yet another brilliant performance as Captain Vikrant Khanna.
