The plight of thousands of migrant workers walking towards their homes from Delhi has shaken the country. These workers are returning to their homes in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by foot as no mode of transport is currently available due to the 21-day lockdown.
The situation of these workers has disturbed Congress member Priyanka Gandhi. She has addressed the same to the government through a video clip coupled with a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Feeling sad looking at thousands of labourers walking towards Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. They are our people, they are Hindustanis, they are labourers. Isn't it our responsibility to help them? When countless people were stranded abroad, we sent planes to bring them so that they can go home, be with their families. Every person wants to be home during a crisis, to be with family,” she said in the one-minute-long video.
She added, “They (labourers) also want the same. They have been working hard in Delhi trying to make a living. All political parties must work together to help them. UP Congress has made a highway task force to help as many of them as possible, but without the government's support, it is not possible for them to reach home. I request the government to help them.”
दिल्ली के बॉर्डर पर त्रासद स्थिति पैदा हो चुकी है। हजारों की संख्या में लोग पैदल अपने घरों की तरफ निकल पड़े हैं। कोई साधन नहीं, भोजन नहीं।

The workers were seen carrying children, bags, and bundles. There were some women and children in the group. Some of them didn’t have money to pay their room rent and they were asked to vacate the place by their landlords.
Police officials requested them not to walk the journey fearing the spread of Covid-19 but they had no other option. The plight of migrant workers is truly understandable. With no money, food, shelter, and jobs, staying back in Delhi was clearly not an option for them. They are prepared to walk for miles, just to connect with their families back home.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has requested the government for a one time transport so that the workers can comfortably get back to their homes. Providing accommodation for the workers was another request that has been put forward by her. It is now left to be seen how the government would come to the rescue of these workers.
