LPG Tanker Detached And Gas Leaked in Coimbatore

Coimbatore City experienced a halt in the movements after an LPG tanker detached from the carrier and fell on the road leading to a minor Gas leak. LPG or Liquified Petroleum Gas is an inflammable substance that can catch fire even if it is associated with hot temperatures. As per reports, the LPG container was carrying close to 18 tonnes of material which fell on the road near Avinashi Road flyover.

According to the police, the truck was taking a roundabout turn before the flyover where the tanker could not hold the corner and eventually detached from the front part of the truck and fell on the road. The material was traveling from Kochi and Kerela to the BPCL LPG Bottling plant located in Coimbatore.

The incident was reported at 3:15 AM and right after the tanker fell on the road, the driver informed the fire and police departments. Fire tenders rushed to the place and sprinkled water on the LPG tanker. Despite there being a minor leak through the tanker, it was important to cool the tanker down.

The road near the area was completely shut and the city came to a partial halt because of the accident. Police ensured that substitute roads were being used to transport the vehicles accordingly. The district collector has shut close to 3 Schools and colleges so as to ensure proper safety for the people.

A Saravana Sundar, commissioner of Coimbatore assured that NDRF teams have been appointed that are present in the scenario. A recovery vehicle will be reaching the accident spot from Tiruchi. Currently, the situation is under control. However, just some precautionary measures are being taken to maintain better safety for the citizens and the vehicles on the road.

A few days back, an LPG-carrying container was hit by a truck which led to an explosion burning off all nearby vehicles and houses. The deadly incident was caused because of the irresponsible turn taken by the LPG container. A truck coming from the same lane collided with the tanker, engulfing more than 35 vehicles and killing 11 people.

This has sparked safety issues in road transportation as such issues are on the rise. The Coimbatore incident did not claim the lives of people, however, it was a sheer example of reckless driving of multi-axle and long vehicles.
