According to police sources 28 year old Sooraj hired snakes twice from a handler named Suresh to accomplish his cruel mission of killing his wife.
In the first attempt he got a Viper to bite his 25 year old wife Uthra in March 2020. The wife was bedridden for 52 days and underwent a plastic surgery as a result of her injuries.
In the second attempt he hired a venomous Cobra for Rs. 10, 000 in May 2020. This time the wife succumbed to her injuries.
Uthra’s family members suspected foul play and registered a complaint with the police. They alleged dowry harassment and domestic violence by Sooraj’s family.
Sooraj was charged with murder and arrested on May 24, 2020. A case of domestic violence, conspiracy and destruction of evidence had been filed against his family members.
The DNA of the snake and other forensic evidence was used to crack the case. The snake handler Suresh was made an approver in the case.
Sooraj admitted to the murder and said that he committed the crime for financial gains.
Kerala Director General of Police Anil Kant said that the case was “one of the shining examples of how scientifically and professionally a murder case was investigated and detected.”
A lot of planning had gone into executing this murder.
In a first-of-its-kind case the additional sessions judge in Kollam district described it as “rarest of the rare.”
