Dr. Mark Hausknecht was killed on the morning of July 20 while he was cycling to work. The suspected killer, a 62-year-old white man who, investigators believe held a twenty-year-old grudge against the doctor after his mother passed away under the doctor’s care. She passed away at the age of 69 while undergoing surgery in April 1997. It was Friday morning when the killer followed the Doctor in a cycle to Houston Methodist Hospital. He rode at least a block ahead before he turned and shot Dr. Hausknecht twice in his torso. The location was less than a mile from the hospital. Surveillance footage shows the suspect escaping the scene on his bicycle after shooting. He was wearing a white hat, white shorts, a dark polo shirt and a bag pack.
Pappas was not to be seen for 48 hours although one person had received a text from the suspect on Tuesday in which he threatened to kill himself. This was before the police obtained an arrest warrant for him and before his name became public. Following the tip-off, the Police dropped by at his place, but he was nowhere to be found. The police soon ascertained that Pappas was plotting the Doctor’s murder for a long time. At 4 am on Wednesday, the police issued an arrest warrant against Pappas. After the shocking incident, the police appealed to the public to tip them with any information they knew about the killer. The most crucial tip-off was when it came to light that Pappas’ mother was a patient of Dr. Mark Hausknecht and that she passed away while he was performing a surgery on her, 20 years ago.
Police Chief Art Acevedo told reporters "We need to find this guy. If he's committed suicide, we need the body. If he's alive, we need to find him." The chief also described the guy as armed, dangerous and possibly suicidal. He added “There was a lot of planning and, sadly, some skill ... The shots that he took, took some skill."
Records suggest that Pappas was a real estate broker and owner of Pappas Realty Company. Some of the family photographs released indicate that Pappas comes from a pretty decent family. He is not married and has one sister. The killer has been living alone in a three bedroom house in Houston since the death of his father in 2010.
Speaking of Dr. Hausknecht, Former President Bush said in a statement “Mark was a fantastic cardiologist and a good man. I will always be grateful for his exceptional, compassionate care. His family is in our prayers.” The widow of Dr. Hausknecht said that it was high time America needed stricter gun laws. Pappas is now on the loose and dangerously poses a threat to the locals living in Houston, Texas. He was last seen in a Schwinn ten-speed bicycle.
