India Extending All Support to Women Sentenced for Death in Yemen

Nimisha Priya, a 36-year-old woman from Palakkad, Kerala, was working as a nurse in Yemen and moved in 2010. She was arrested in 2017 for allegedly killing a national citizen. Despite her family trying to secure bail in 2020 by using the tradition of “Diyat”, Rashad-Al-Alimi sentenced the women to death three days ago. In this tradition, the accused family gives money to the deceased to settle the case. The family failed to seek bail.

Randhir Jaiswal, an official from the Ministry of External Affairs, claimed that the family is trying hard to “explore all relevant options.” In his statement, Jaiswal said, “We are aware of the sentencing of Ms Nimisha Priya in Yemen. “We understand that the family of Ms Priya is exploring relevant options. “The government is extending all possible help in the matter.”

She is currently in the central prison of Yemen, located in Sana’a. Nimisha’s mother visited the country to negotiate the “Blood Money.” Some expatriates settled in Yemen are helping her to get her daughter out of prison.

Nimisha set up a clinic after she moved to Yemen in 2019 with her co-partner Talal Abdo Mehdi. Reports indicate a frequent conflict between the two because of embezzlement with money. Talal Abdo Mehdi was killed and all the doubts were on Nimisha. She was arrested for allegedly killing her business partner.

Nimisha’s plea against her death sentence was dismissed; however, she was allowed to settle the case by paying “Blood Money”. Yemen Police retained Nimisha while her husband and daughter were released from the country. Nimisha’s family decided to settle the amount of $40,000 with the family of the deceased. Her family could only arrange a sum of $19,000 but could not arrange the rest of the funds said the report.

The Ministry of External Affairs is in constant communication with the parents and the expatriates who are helping in the release of Nimisha. While there is no fixed date for her execution, The Indian Government has to arrange the necessary resources so as to bring peace between both parties and get Nimisha out of the country following proper procedures and protocols.

The news comes afloat where Iran is helping the Indian Nurse to get out of the sentence. This can be beneficial as nations may create a better impact and can help in rescuing Numisha from her death.
