Haridwar Ganga Water Not Safe for Drinking Claims Pollution Control Board

Pollution levels in Ganga water have significantly increased over the past few years mainly because of irresponsible water usage. Recently Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board claimed Ganga water to be unsafe for drinking while it is okay to bathe in it. The decision came right before the start of the Maha Kumbh Mela.

The water tested at Haridwar was marked as category B which is quite harmful. The water was tested 4 months ago near the Uttar Pradesh border and was measured in specifically 3 factors namely, pH levels, Dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, and total coliform bacteria.

Rajendra Singh, Regional officer of UKPCB claimed that category B is not very toxic but cannot be used as a drinking source. However, the pollution is less which it suitable for taking a bath.

Preist Ujjwal Pandi did not support the cause as he believes Ganga is a sacred and purest form of water. “Ganga water, when pure, cures diseases, including cancer. If we test the water now and in 10 years, it should remain pure, but human waste is compromising its quality,". The assessment of the water quality determined the levels of pollution. However, with the cultural and religious aspects, devotees of Maha Kumbh Mela might disregard the facts claimed by the Pollution Control Board.

India being rich in culture and heritage has maintained its long heritage and is preserving the traditions followed by the people. However, people now need to understand the growing concerns over these holy rivers.
