Born in the year 1919, Azmi began his journey with ghazals. His first ghazal was created, when he was only 11. The nation’s most glorious name in ghazal singers, the most esteemed Begum Akhtar also lent her voice to one of his ghazals, later in life.
Kaifi Azmi’s destiny brought me into films. It was an era, when neo directors like Bimal Roy, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas were putting their blood and sweat in building the foundations of ‘New Cinema’, Azmi came forward to help this fresh notion reach the altitudes of success, providing it with a whole new lingo.
Kaifi Azmi is considered to be the pioneering lyricist who brought the beauty and romanticism of Urdu verse to the Indian film industry. Chetan Anand’s ‘Heer Ranjha’ released in 1970 exhibited dialogues in verse and that too in mainstream cinema could be a huge success in reality. Azmi wrote down the entire dialogue in verse, and its songs are still mass favourites.
Azmi’s contribution as a screenwriter and/or lyricist to Guru Dutt's Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat (1964), Kohra (1964), Anupama (1966), Uski Kahani (1966), Saat Hindustani (1969), Shola Aur Shabnam, Parwana (1971), Bawarchi (1972), Pakeezah (1972), Hanste Zakhm (1973), Arth will forever be remembered.
From farmer suicides, women’s rights to communal harmony — Kaifi Azmi wrote poems about issues that are relevant even today.
