170 people which include 148 people working in the NTPC plant in Tapovan and 22 at Rishiganga project are missing. Around 14 people have been killed as a result of the natural disaster. 30 People are trapped in a 2.5 km long tunnel.

The burst glacier has washed away roads. Several villages have been damaged. Hydroelectric stations and five bridges have been washed away. The Tapovan Vishnugad hydropower project has also been damaged which was under construction.

While surveying Uttarakhand’s Tapovan Vishnugad hydropower plant, it has been observed that the dam located at the confluence of Dhauliganga and Rishiganga rivers has been completely washed off, said IAF sources.
Uttarakhand's State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is working to rescue people at the tunnel near Tapovan dam in Chamoli district. They had to wait for the levels of water to decrease before beginning their rescue operations.

NDRF commandant Praveen Kumar Tiwary told NDTV: "Our team reached at 3 am. They've started the rescue operations. We hope for the best and are doing our best. We're using the latest and the best of the equiment. The terrain is so rugged and the temp reached up to sub zero (conditions). In such conditions, it is diffcult to conduct rescue operations. But our team is doing its best.”
3 bodies have been recovered so far. Massive rescue operations are still on.
