French Striker Mathys Tel Is Slammed by Bayern Munich for Racist Abuse

Bayern Munich on Sunday blasted racist remarks on social media targeting 18-year-old French striker Mathys Tel following the club's 3-0 defeat by RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup. "We condemn the inhuman comments received by Mathys Tel on social media to the strongest degree," the club wrote on Twitter, now rebranded as X. "Anyone who writes such disgustingly racist things is no fan of FC Bayern. Mathys, we are behind you and you have our full support!"

The teenager started Saturday's game in Munich before he was replaced just after the hour by England captain Harry Kane, Bayern's record new signing.

The German champions wore shirts against Leipzig at the Allianz Arena displaying the words "Rot Gegen Rassismus" (Reds Against Racism), the name of the club's anti-racism initiative.

"Thank you to my real Bavarian family and all those who support me when the weather is nice and when it rains," Tel posted on Instagram.

"The work continues and will continue stronger."

Tel signed for Bayern from Rennes in July 2022 and became the club's youngest goalscorer last season aged 17 years and 126 days.

He scored six goals in 28 appearances for Bayern in his first season in Germany.
