The earthquake struck at 7:51 am north of Dhekiajuli.
Dhekiajuli lies 140 km north of the main city- Guwahati.
Shocking visuals show extensive damage, cracks on walls and floors of some buildings.
According to a Reuter witness many people ran out of their homes out of fear.
The tremors were repeatedly felt in many north eastern areas and even the neighbouring mountainous region of Bhutan.

“We don't have reports of any casualties but we are seeing images and visuals of extensive damage,” Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told Reuters.
An official who wished to remain anonymous told Reuters that the National Disaster Management Agency was assessing reports of destruction and casualties.
