Donald Trump Claims 7 million People to Welcome Him in Ahmedabad, Trolled on Twitter
Days before his trip to India, speaking to media in Washington, President Trump bragged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised him that there will be 7 million people, who will welcome him between Ahmedabad airport and his reception event site in Ahmedabad.
US President Donald Trump's relationship with numbers is known to everyone and when it comes to his popularity on social media he is far ahead in self boosting. Now as he heads for his first official visit to India, Twitter users have called out the conservative leader to check his facts.
Days before his trip to India, speaking to media in Washington, President Trump bragged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised him that there will be 7 million people, who will welcome him between Ahmedabad airport and his reception event site in Ahmedabad.
Referring to a roadshow ahead of a ‘Namaste Trump’ rally in Ahmedabad, Trump said, “We are not treated well by India, but I happen to like Prime Minister Modi a lot. And he told me we’ll have 7 million people between the airport and the event.”
The bombastic claim by Donald Trump quickly sparked a wave of skepticism and sarcasm on Twitter. As most of the Twitterati noted that the population of Ahmedabad according to the last 2011 census was 55 lakh, which means 5.5 million and is estimated to be 86 lakh or 8.6 million by 2020. Therefore, if one believes in Trump’s claim it would be 80 per cent of the city’s population who will line up for him.
Prashant Bhushan tweeted, “Fresh from Impeachment saga, Trump comes to Ahmedabad for a respite, where his friend Modi has promised him 7 Million people (more than the population of Ahmedabad) to greet him on the roads! Govt spent crores of our money on flowers & wall to keep poverty out of his sight!”
President Trump will land in India on coming Monday for a two-day trip that has seen the Indian government busy with all preparations, including the grand reception in the newly completed world’s largest cricket stadium that the US President is going to open in the city.
According to news agency Reuters, authorities in Gujarat have confirmed that they are expecting to spend around Rs 85 crore on preparations for the first visit of President Trump to the city that is likely to last less than three hours, including a 400-metre wall along Trump’s route to block slums from his view.
In the past, the US President’s dicey relationship with the facts has been questioned by no less than the Foreign Ministry of India. Last year, President Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to help mediate with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, but New Delhi firmly said that no such request has been ever made.
