Docu-series ‘Fallen Idols: Nick And Aaron Carter’ Recounts The Controversial Lives Of The Two Brothers

Popular boy group, the Backstreet Boys, became a craze in the 90s ! Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson made up the teen sensation band. The boy band group remains the best selling boy-band of all time. BSB was unique among boy groups of the 90s, as they stayed around for a long time even after their peak years.

Despite their skyrocketing stardom, the Backstreet Boys had their fair share of controversies, particularly involving singer Nick Carter.

He joined the boy band at the tender age of thirteen years. He was accused of rape and assault and had been arrested.

The docuseries Fallen Idols: Nick And Aaron Carter focuses on many factors that led to the rift between the two brothers Nick and Aaron. Some of the reasons being an alcohol filled home environment, no parental supervision, toxic fan culture and the complexities of the challenging music industry.

It looks into Aaron Carter’s mental health struggles, substance addiction, and also suggests that his untimely death was caused by bullying and online harassment.

Most importantly, it delves into the sexual assault allegations against Nick Carter by three women; Dream singer Melissa Schuman, Ashley Repp who is a good friend of Aaron’s twin sister Angel, and the Pussycat Dolls member Kaya Jones.

Fallen Idols: Nick And Aaron Carter executive producer Michael Hirschorn and showrunner Elissa Halperin wanted to explore the topics of Fandom loyalty, toxic effects of social media and how social media takes things to a newer level.

“We were very much struck by the degree to which, even eight years into #MeToo, so many women are fiercely refusing to believe that anything about their idols could be less than perfect. Add into that what I’d call the ‘team sports’ aspect of social media, and it becomes very difficult to get viewers to see the shades of grey in any controversy,” Hirschorn tells The Hollywood Reporter.

“Especially with Aaron, we want viewers to take internet trolling seriously. It’s not as simple as just getting off social media. Trolling extends into real life in profound and unsettling ways.”

The docu-series aims to tell the story truthfully and fairly.

Fallen Idols: Nick And Aaron Carter’ will premiere on Investigation Discovery on Friday, May 31.
