Court Places Temporary Stay Order on Junaid Khan’s Debut Film Maharaj
The Gujarat High Court has temporarily halted the release of Junaid Khan's debut film "Maharaj" on Netflix, following a petition by a Hindu group. The film, set for June 14, faces claims it could hurt Hindu sentiments. The next hearing is on June 18
A temporary stay order has been placed on the release of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut OTT film Maharaj, by the Gujarat High Court on June 13.
The movie was all set to release on June 14 on Netflix.
The court placed the order on Maharaj after a petition was filed by a Hindu group. They claimed that the movie would hurt Hindu sentiments and could trigger violence against specific Hindu communities.
The petition states that the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 was based on allegations of misconduct by a prominent figure and ruled over by the English Judges of the Supreme Court of Bombay.
Hashtags like ‘Boycott Netflix’ and ‘Ban Maharaj Film’ have been trending on X since yesterday.
The movie is directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under YRF Entertainment. The film is set in pre independent India and is based on the true events of The Maharaj Libel Case. It follows Karsandas Mulji, a fearless journalist and social reformer, who takes on a powerful man.
An alumni of Elphinstone College and protege of leader Dadabhai Naoroji, Karsandas wrote on widow remarriage, stood up for the oppressed and was a strong advocate for women’s rights.
The legal case is said to have garnered widespread attention and went on to become one of the most significant battles of all time. Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and Sharvari are playing prominent roles in the OTT movie.
The next court hearing is scheduled to take place on June 18.
