The terminal 2 of the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru is a true visual delight. The airport has been trending on social media for the past two weeks and for all the right reasons.
The terminal has incorporated the concept of “Terminal-In- A-Garden.” This is to offer the passenger the experience of walking in a garden. The airport is infused with exotic species of plants. The plants are watered through a top-bottom irrigation model. A major part of the terminal is crafted by engineered Bamboo which is a renewable material that will emit zero carbon.
The terminal is spread over an area of 255645 square metres and will have nine customs hand baggage screening.
The gate lounge will have a seating capacity of 5,932. It’ll have 95 check in bays, 17 security check lanes, departure immigration (30 conventionally manned, 10 eGates), Arrival immigration (34 conventional, 6 eGates, 20 visa on arrival bays.), Nine baggage claim belts and 15 tarmac bus gates.
The terminal 2 has been built on four guiding principles: terminal in a garden, sustainability, technology and innovation and art and culture of Karnataka.
Bangalore International T2 was conceptualised and designed by American Architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merril as an ode to the garden city while construction was carried out by L&T.
“The terminal has just been inaugurated and there are a couple of processes yet to be completed. Certain trials and security sweeps have to be conducted. As soon as these are completed, we will operationalise it, roughly between one or one and a half months”, Bangalore International Airport Limited chief executive and managing director Hari Marar said.
The terminal is equipped to handle 25 million flyers annually and the airport will begin its operations after one and a half months. The new airport terminal T2 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2022.
