Actor and surfer Tamayo Perry, of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides fame, passed away due to a tragic shark attack in Hawaii on Sunday afternoon. The actor who was also a lifeguard was attacked when he was surfing in the sea.
According to Honolulu’s emergency services, the attack took place at Malaekahana Beach around 1:00 p.m. local time.
Reports say that the paramedics were quick to act yet they couldn’t save the actor’s life. Tamayo, 49, was pronounced dead after he was brought to the shore by a jet ski. His injuries were severe. Besides suffering numerous shark bites, he had an arm and a leg missing.
Soon after the tragic incident, ocean officials posted shark warnings in the area. It’s not known which shark species attacked Tamayo Perry.
Tamayo Perry acted as a buccaneer in the 2011 film ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ alongside Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush. He has appeared in TV shows such as Lost, Blue Crush, Hawaii Five-0. In addition to this, he was part of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle film. He has appeared in a Coca Cola advertisement and ran a surf school with his wife.
Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lage said, “Tamayo's personality was infectious. And as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else.”
He noted that Tamayo was well known internationally as a “professional surfer.” The Mayor of Honolulu, Rick Blangiardi, described the surfer as a legendary waterman and a highly respected individual who grew up in the area.
The chances of becoming a victim of a shark attack are high, if you are surfing, waterboarding, swimming or wading in the sea.
Hawaii has seen only two fatal Shark attacks this year, including Tamayo’s recent attack. Shark attacks are uncommon in Hawaii and fatal shark attacks are even rarer.
