The 74th BAFTA awards were held virtually over two nights due to the ongoing pandemic. 

BAFTA paid tribute to late Indian actors Rishi Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, and American actor Chadwick Boseman in the Memoriam segment. 

The video that was compiled first paid tribute to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away on April 9. BAFTA honoured around 40 people that included names such as Sean Connery, Kirk Douglas, Ian Holm, and Barbara Windsor, George Segal, and Christopher Plummer.

Actor Rishi Kapoor passed away last year on 30 April 2020 due to leukemia. He was admitted to Sir H N Reliance Foundation after complaining of breathing problems. 

Irrfan Khan died as a result of complications due to a neuroendocrine tumour whereas Chadwick Boseman passed away last year due to his long battle with colon cancer. 

At the ceremony Adarsh Gourav who was nominated in the best actor category for ‘White Tiger’ lost to American actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. ‘White Tiger’ didn’t win an award in the Best Adapted Screenplay category as well.

Actress Priyanka Chopra attended the event along with her husband Nick Jonas. Priyanka graced the red carpet in a red embroidered jacket and white harem trousers while Nick Jonas looked dapper in a black tuxedo. Priyanka gave away the EE Rising Star Award to Bukky Bakray.

Sir Anthony Hopkins bagged the Best Actor award for the film ‘The Father’ which is about a man suffering from dementia. The film is directed by France's Florian Zeller. Hopkins told journalists later that he was not present during the ceremony as he didn’t expect to win. The 83-year-old actor was in Welsh and was busy painting in his hotel room. 

 Actress Frances McDormand bagged the best actress award for ‘Nomadland.’ Film ‘Nomadland’ was a big winner at the virtual event, winning awards in four major categories namely Best Film, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.

The American recession drama film revolves around a woman Fern (Frances McDormand) who has to leave her home in Nevada after her husband dies and the sole industry in which she works shuts down. 

It explores her life as a nomad, her relationships with other van dwellers , and how the widow struggles to find a stable job. Chloe Zhao's ‘Nomadland’ has bagged a whopping 6 nominations for the Oscars.
