The Best Actress award this year went to Keerthy Suresh for ‘Mahanati’. The 27-year-old actress who predominantly works in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema portrayed the life and times of Savitri, the beautiful and talented yesteryear Indian actress and wife of legendary actor Gemini Ganeshan. The dramatic rise and fall of Savitri was captured in the film through the perspective of a journalist and a photographer, played by Samantha Akkineni and Vijay Devarakonda.
While giving away the awards, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu referred to women empowerment, mentioning, it’s not govt.’s sole responsibility. The Khiladi of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar, received National Award for ‘PadMan’ in the Best Film on Social Issues category. Akshay’s ‘PadMan’ was a maiden attempt dealing with women’s menstruation and hygiene based on unbelievably true events.
