‘Sweet Bobby’ Tells Us The Story About Kirat Assi’s Fearful Encounter on Facebook
Netflix documentary ‘Sweet Bobby’ narrates the story of Kirat Assi and how she becomes a victim of a catfishing scheme.
Kirat Assi, a radio presenter living in London, belonged to a respectful Sikh family. She was single and was patiently waiting to meet the right partner in her life. Her parents were also keen for her to get married soon.
An online friend request from ‘Bobby’ in 2009, however, changed her life forever.
‘Bobby’ was a cardiologist. The two of them shared a few common friends in the Sikh community which made the relationship seem genuine.
The communication between the two deepened as the years went by. That being said, Bobby always gave reasons for not meeting Kirat in person. The reasons included that he was shot and in another instance, he told her that he had suffered a heart stroke.
Somehow there were always people who even confirmed these stories !
After nine long years, Kirat was desperate to learn the truth about Bobby. The bitter truth was that she was a victim of a catfishing game. The person who was texting her was not Bobby but her own female cousin Simran.
The mind-baffling story is now being streamed on Netflix.
The reason Kirat has shared her story with the world is because she wants to challenge stigmas in the South Asian community.
Simran refuses to appear in the documentary. Another actress is portraying her character. A civil case was filed against her by Kirat.
A statement from Simran included in the show says: "This matter involves events that began when she was a schoolgirl. She considers it a private matter and strongly objects to what she describes as numerous unfounded and damaging accusations."
Kirat has not got all the answers to the unfortunate incident.
Simran’s behaviour has puzzled her. What led Simran to target her? I can't understand why you didn't stop… what gave you pleasure from hearing somebody in pain”, Kirat questions.
Kirat Assi may not get all the answers, nevertheless, she has decided to move on. “I don't carry the victim mentality around with me. I don't want to be that person.”
On a good note, she says, “I'm going to carry on working towards goals and dreams.”
