‘Laapata Ladies’ is India’s Official Entry for Oscars 2025, Kiran Rao Shares Gratitude Note
Kiran Rao’s ‘Laapata Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s entry for the Oscars. The film was made under Aamir Khan’s productions.
Director Kiran Rao’s comedy-drama ‘Laapata Ladies’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025. This was announced by the Film Federation of India on Monday. The movie, however, has to make it to the final nomination list according to the film’s writer Sneha Desai.
‘Laapata Ladies’ was selected from among 29 Indian films such as Animal, Attam, Sam Bahadur, Chandu Champion, Kalki 2898 AD, Joram, Maidaan and Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light.
Speaking of her film being chosen as the official entry for the Oscars, Kiran expressed, “I am deeply honored and delighted that our film Laapataa Ladies has been chosen as India's official entry to the Academy Awards. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life. Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope that this film will resonate with audiences across the world, just as it has in India.”
The director wrote further, “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the selection committee and to everyone who believed in this film. It is indeed a great privilege to be selected from among such amazing Indian films this year - who are equally worthy contenders for this honour.”
‘Laapata Ladies’ is about two newlywed brides who get swapped in a crowded train while travelling to their respective husbands' homes. The brides in the train wear the same bridal attire and have covered their faces with their ghoonghat (veil) which is the prime reason for the mishap.
Deepak who was in a deep sleep, wakes up and realises that he has reached his destination. Amidst the chaos and darkness, he hurriedly disembarks from the train without realising that he has picked up the wrong wife, while his wife Phool Kumari has been left behind in the train. This leads to a string of adventures and life lessons, with the rural landscape as the backdrop.
Even important topics like feminism and women's empowerment have been handled in a subtle and light-hearted manner without male bashing or being overly preachy. The male characters beautifully complement their female counterparts without losing their streak of masculinity. The film features Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava and Chhaya Kadam, among others in important roles.
We hope ‘Laapata Ladies’, which has entertained and won the audience's hearts with its simple storytelling, emerges victorious in the days to come.
