Marvel Brings in Chinese Superheroes, Marvel Universe Expands

Apart from the fierce Avengers, Marvel Universe now has Chinese superheroes grabbing a foothold in the comics market in China. Let me introduce you to its hottest Chinese characters in the block.

Gone are the days when the superhero figures from only the Western world saved the human race from the evil forces. Asians are gradually joining the league of superpowers, initiated by China. NetEase Comics, one of China’s largest comic platforms has shaken hands with Marvel, and they will be co-authoring a number of comic series keeping Chinese heroic characters in the lead.

Meet Lin Lie, an 18-year-old boy who picks up a legendary sword to fight against an evil creature and ruler, Chiyou. Its first edition is already out, and its translated title is “Warriors of Three Sovereigns”.

The other comic, under the translated name “Cyclone” revolves around a young female Lei Ling. She’s an architect by profession, and has the superpowers to control air current.

NetEase has also released a bio for the Marvel’s first Chinese superheroes.

Marvel Universe that possesses around 7000 characters has taken a revolutionary step by bringing in Chinese superheroes in the forefront. As earlier, Asian characters were seen playing supporting cast or villainous roles.

Marvel characters, especially the Avengers have gained immense popularity in China. Thanks to Marvel Cinematic Universe for making such visual wonders in its live-action movies. “Avengers: Infinity War” made a whole new pre-sale record in China of around $50 million, and that’s only with its ticket booking.

The director of the Economist Corporate Network Robert Koepp told BBC, “It's a way to help Marvel reach more of the China market. Disney must think there is a lot of untapped market potential.” But quite naturally, this NetEase Marvel collaboration doesn’t limit its vision to getting hold of the Chinese market alone, rather, it definitely aspires to help Marvel expand and enrich globally.

Sources have confirmed that the Chinese authors and illustrators will have an intense involvement in executing its Chinese series. As, although the superhero characters are set in the modern world, they reflect true Chinese culture.

But will these superheroes will ever be face-to-face with our very own Avengers? No confirmation yet. But well, there’s a good news. Iron Man’s mask was spotted in the first issue of “Warriors of Three Sovereigns”. Now look who’s smiling!
